Commentary on Don’t Look Up
Don't Look Up
What a weird feeling this movie left me with. Big impression when I watched it the first time, and the second time I rewatched it again. Maybe someone will not agree with me and find this movie boring and too long. A typical reaction, I think, would be, 'Why did they make it 2 hours long? There was no need for it to be this long.' But the message this film carries—about human ignorance and self-destructive mentality, our system’s inefficiency, which will kill us in the end and save a small portion of the richest (in this case, equal with 'bad people')—is striking. For example, the scene where the president, who is female, is running to save her life but forgets her son, who is a 'materialistic bastard' but still a kid who believes in his mom and waits for her to come back. Or the behavior of humanity, who don’t believe in the existence of the meteor until it can be seen in the sky, and then, when a group tells them 'Don’t Look Up,' they believe and support this idea. This mirrors our society, which can be fooled even to ignore hunger or deny what’s right in front of them.
The movie is placed in the comedy section, where I would not put it at all; it’s more of a psychological movie.
